Scuderia Toro Rosso STR13 Formula One

We've been out in a very wet Italy with the Toro Rosso team for their official season start filming day.

With a team of 7 on hand to capture the action we've been out in Italy with Toro Rosso and drivers Pierre Gasley and Brendon Hartly as they get their first drives in the new car. We captured the action from day start to end and were privileged to get a rare tour of the factory too.

Approximately a year ago we made a film for Red Bull about Sebastian Ogier, five time winner of the World Rally Drivers' Championship, fulfilling his lifelong dream of driving an F1 car. Our crew were in their element creating the film. The look on the teams faces when we discussed a new brief from Red Bull Motorsports to make a film on Red Bull’s Scuderia Toro Rosso F1 team’s new car, the STR13, was priceless! This was an exclusive chance to work with the team and the car before it was seen by the public.

Our brief was to create a few short films and social assets covering the making of the  STR13 Formula 1 car and it’s first test drive of the season, including driver interviews.

A short flight to Bologna later we arrived at the Red Bull Scuderia Toro Rosso factory in Faenza. It seems everyone in Faenza is mad for the local team Toro Rosso. Even the serviettes were embroidered with the local team’s colours at the restaurant we had lunch at. It was the start of a few days filming in which we got to witness first hand, on camera and off, the extraordinary passion and talents of everyone behind the scenes. It's quite an operation to get these extraordinary machines to the start of the season. It was a rare and brilliant insight into all aspects of Formula One that rarely get seen on race day. Plus we got to spend some time alone with the drivers before they hit the track.

We spent the day with James Key, Scuderia Toro Rosso's Technical Director, who took us through the process of how a F1 car is made. We were blown away by the focus and dedication of the 400 plus member team, every member’s common goal being finding ways of improving the car’s performance, with a new innovation invented on average every thirty minutes!

The following day we arrived at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the roll out of STR13’s maiden test drive powered by the new Honda engine. The excitement was palpable.

The weather for the day was not looking good with rain forecast from mid-morning for the rest of the day. With a tight testing schedule to work to we hit the ground running. With one team based in the pits and the other out on the track we were ready to go. Freezing cold and sopping wet we loved every moment of it. In the words of BAFTA-winning Digitas Lbi Executive Creative Director Peter Drake, “You guys are earning every penny today.”

We had the privilege of interviewing Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly, Toro Rosso’s drivers for the 2018 season, both young incredibly talented drivers. So much so that Pierre subsequently came fourth in the Bahrain Grand Prix making Red Bull and Honda truly proud.

We're wishing Toro Rosso all the best for the season ahead.
